Once Upon a Time
Once upon a time there was a lonely baker who desperately wanted to—nah, just kidding, this isn’t one of those stories. Although we would love to see more fairy-tales about pizza, wouldn’t you? The actual origins of pizza are a bit hazy. It is commonly believed that pizza got its start in Italy. However, other civilizations have variants as well—the Greeks, Egyptians, Babylonians, Israelis, and Armenians just to name a few.
But it’s called “pizza,” that makes it Italian.
We hear you. But as it turns out, the word “pizza” has mysterious origins as well. It is the Italian word for “pie” and is thought to derive from either the Latin pix, meaning “pitch” or the Greek word pitta. Others claim that it comes from a Langobardic word, bizzo, which means “bite.”
Yes, there are those who claim that pizza originated in Naples, Italy. The story goes (we guess this IS one of those stories) that the poor people living in Naples had to have affordable food that was easy and quick to eat, so they topped flatbread with cheese, tomatoes, garlic, oil, and anchovies. Then one day, a guy by the name Raffaele Esposito had the honor of serving one of these creations to King Umberto and Queen Margherita of Italy. The queen supposedly loved the flavor of the mozzarella, basil, and tomatoes so much, that Esposito named it “Pizza Margherita.”
It’s a great story. But so many other cultures also had pizza variations that it isn’t really fair to say that pizza definitely originated in Italy.
